Brandenburg Gate

Pariser Platz 1, 10117 Berlin
Charlottenburg

The Brandenburg Gate marked the border between East and West Berlin and thus the border between the states of the Warsaw Pact and NATO. It was up to the reunification of Germany, symbol of the Cold War and after 1990 became a symbol of the reunification of Germany and Europe. It was built in the years 1788 to 1791 at instruction of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II by Carl Gotthard Langhans and used to be a toll gate through which one could enter or leave the old Berlin. One of the five passages, the mean – the slightly larger – previously was reserved only for the royal family, now you too can walk through. Here you come together in Berlin and something is going on nearly all the time. Take pot luck who is just here today.
